Photography Studio Retainers for Agencies: How Monthly Studio Hire Works in London
If your agency books photography or video studios in London more than twice a month, you are almost certainly overpaying — not because day rates are unreasonable, but because ad-hoc booking carries hidden costs: scrambling for availability, re-briefing unfamiliar spaces, and paying full price every single time. A studio retainer fixes all three. Here is exactly how monthly studio hire works at STU 22 in Wapping, East London, and how to work out whether it pays for itself for your team.
What is a photography studio retainer?
A studio retainer (we call ours a Partner plan) is a fixed monthly fee that buys your agency a bank of studio hours, priority booking, and a better effective hourly rate than anyone paying ad-hoc. Instead of negotiating each shoot from scratch, your producers book directly into our calendar with priority access across all three of our spaces:
The Cove — our flagship daylight photography studio (£140/hr or £900/day ad-hoc)
The Blackout — a fully controllable dark studio for video and lit work (£120/hr or £800/day ad-hoc)
The Portal — our podcast and content room (£35/hr ad-hoc)
Every booking is all-inclusive: no cleaning fees, no operations surcharges, no surprises at checkout. Retainer hours also include the Full Production Kit — the lighting and grip package that ad-hoc clients add for £200/day.
The three Partner tiers
CREATOR — £1,250/month for 12 studio hours. Effective £104/hr including the Full Kit. Built for smaller agencies and production teams shooting 1–2 days a month.
PRODUCTION — £2,500/month for 28 studio hours. Effective £89/hr including the Full Kit. Our most popular tier: roughly three full shoot days a month with room for pickups.
RESIDENT — £4,500/month for 56 studio hours. Effective £80/hr including the Full Kit. For agencies and labels running weekly productions who effectively want a second office with cycs and sound treatment.
Hours are flexible across all three studios, and one partner hour converts to three Portal hours — useful when a campaign needs a podcast or social-content day alongside the main shoot.
The maths for an agency booking two days a month
Say your team shoots two full days a month in The Cove with the Full Kit. Ad-hoc, that is £900 + £200 per day = £2,200/month for 20 hours. On the PRODUCTION tier you pay £2,500 for 28 hours — eight extra hours (nearly another full shoot day), kit always included, and priority booking so the dates you need are actually available. From the third shoot day onward, the retainer wins outright.
Why agencies switch to retainers
1. Priority booking. Partners book ahead of the public calendar. When a client moves a shoot with four days' notice, that matters more than any discount.
2. Predictable cost per shoot. One monthly invoice, one rate, kit included. Your producers can quote clients faster because studio cost is a known number.
3. A space your team knows. Same lighting rig, same power, same load-in every time. Setup time drops shoot after shoot.
4. Hospitality and production support included. Kitchen, coffee and teas, and a team that knows your workflow.
