What should I consider when choosing a studio in London for a campaign or commercial?

Five things decide whether a shoot day runs smoothly: the shape of the room, what the hourly rate actually includes, load-in, power, and whether you can control the light.

Room shape matters more than square footage. A long room with a short throw will not give you a full-length fashion frame no matter how many metres it has. Our Infinity Cove is a 16ft × 16ft seamless white cyclorama under a 12ft ceiling, which is the working depth you need for full-length and moving subjects.

The rate is the second trap. Many London studios quote a low hourly figure and then add equipment hire, a cleaning charge and a facility fee. At STU 22 the hourly rate covers power, cleaning, studio operations and a lighting and grip kit. There are no equipment, cleaning or facility fees. All prices are quoted excluding VAT at 20%.

Load-in, power and light control are the quiet ones. All three rooms are on the ground floor with easy load-in and street parking nearby, with multiple 13A sockets and air conditioning throughout. If you need to kill daylight entirely, the Blackout is a purpose-built sealed room rather than curtains over a window.

Which London studio offers the best value for fashion photography?

Value is rate divided by what you get done in the day, not the headline number. A cove that forces you to shoot tight costs you retouching later; a room with no blackout costs you the afternoon when the light turns.

For fashion and campaign work we run the Cove and the Blackout as a pair. The Cove is £120/hr, £450 for a five-hour half day and £850 for a ten-hour full day, with large windows for natural light or a full blackout when you want to build the light yourself. The Blackout is £110/hr, £400 half day and £800 full day, 26ft × 19ft with 12ft ceilings, a dark concrete floor and haze-friendly total light seal. Booking both gives you a clean-beauty setup and a moody setup without moving location.

Are premium studios worth the investment for branded campaigns?

Usually, yes — but for a specific reason. On a branded shoot the studio is the cheapest line on the budget. Talent, crew, stylists, agency time and post all cost more per hour than the room. A cheap room that adds an hour of setup, loses you the light, or forces a reshoot is the most expensive decision on the call sheet.

What you are buying at the premium end is predictability: a cyc that is actually seamless, a blackout that is actually black, power that does not trip, air conditioning so talent is comfortable, and a private changing room. Those are all standard here rather than add-ons.

Are content creation studios worth it for a creator who usually films at home?

If you film at home and it works, keep filming at home. The studio earns its money in three situations: when you need a look you cannot build in your flat, when you need to batch a month of content in one day, and when the client is watching.

Who offers dependable music video studio hire in London, and what should I check first?

Check three things: haze policy, blackout quality and ceiling height. A music video that needs beams needs haze, and a lot of studios will not allow it. The Blackout is haze-friendly, sealed for zero ambient light, and has 12ft ceilings with a dark concrete floor so you are not fighting bounce.

Is there a photo studio in London with professional lighting included in the price?

Yes — that is the default here, not an upgrade. Every booking includes Aputure continuous lighting, C-stands, combo stands, light stands, a boom, magic arms and sandbags, plus poly boards, gels, diffusers, softboxes, umbrellas and extension leads. Kitchen access with tea and coffee is included too.

If you want the bigger flash and effects package, the optional Full Kit upgrade is £200 per booking day and adds the Aputure Spotlight and Nova P300, Godox RGB150W, SL60W and MS300, Lencarta UltraPro and SmartFlash, Amaran 60D and 60X, and the Leica Cine projector. It is always optional and always shown upfront.

Do London studios charge extra for the white backdrop or cleaning?

Practice varies across the city, and it is the single most common hidden cost — some studios bill a repaint or a cleaning fee on top of the hourly rate. At STU 22 cleaning and studio operations are included in the rate and there are no cleaning or facility fees. If your shoot involves paint, liquids, glitter or anything else that could mark the cyclorama, tell us when you book and we will confirm the arrangement in writing before the day.

How do the audio capabilities compare for podcast recording in East London?

The Portal is treated rather than simply quiet. The walls and ceiling carry full professional acoustic panelling and the room is isolated from the rest of the building, which is what stops bleed from the other two studios and from the street. On the hardware side it has a Tascam DR-40X recorder, studio monitoring speakers, a Pioneer XDJ-RX3 with turntables and mixer, and a large screen for visuals or playback.

Because the lighting is already set for filming and there is seating for guests and co-hosts, a video podcast does not need a separate lighting call. Bring your own cameras and microphones if you have a preferred chain. More on the podcast studio page.

Which London studios offer both soundproofed recording and video in one building?

That combination is rare, and it is the reason STU 22 exists in this format. The Portal handles the acoustically treated recording and DJ side; the Cove and Blackout handle the photography and video side. Can I book at short notice, including weekends, and what does it cost?

Yes. We are open seven days a week, 08:00–22:00, and weekends are priced the same as weekdays — there is no weekend surcharge. Minimum hire is one hour, so a short-notice session does not force you into a half day. Availability at weekends goes first, so the earlier you ask the better.

How should I compare London studios for branded content?

Build a like-for-like total, not an hourly comparison. For each studio, add the hourly or day rate, equipment hire, any cleaning or facility fee, VAT, and the travel time your crew loses getting there. Then ask what happens if you overrun.

What if I need the studio regularly?

Monthly retainers work out cheaper than ad-hoc booking. Creator is £1,250/mo for 12 hours (£104/hr), Production is £2,500/mo for 28 hours (£89/hr) and Resident is £4,500/mo for 56 hours (£80/hr). Hours are valid across all three studios. Creator rolls over up to 25% of unused hours, Production adds pre-production support and monthly content planning, and Resident adds an account manager, first refusal on weekends and on-site storage.

Can the studio be hired for an event?

Yes. The full venue takes 200 guests standing across all three rooms at £350/hr with a five-hour minimum, which makes a standard five-hour evening £1,750. That includes the sound system, DJ equipment, professional lighting, the Leica Cine projector, a studio host, kitchen access and a private changing room.
